Being an altar server requires reverence, knowledge, and a love of God and the Church. A server is offered a unique perspective of the Mass throughout the important role of assisting the priest at Mass. We aim to have 2-3 altar servers at a weekend Mass. Scheduling is flexible for altar servers and a typical server will be asked to serve about once a month at a time that is preferable to the server and his or her family. Third graders through adults are welcome and encouraged to join this unique ministry.
Training is available for those who have never served before and is usually done on an individual basis prior to Mass with Deacon Todd Martin.
Extraordinary Ministers of the Holy Eucharist offer Christ’s Body and Blood to the members of Christ’s body — the Church. This precious sacrament is offered at every Mass to Catholics in good Church standing. Extraordinary Ministers of the Holy Eucharist arrive approximately 10 minutes prior to mass and stay after Mass a few minutes to help clean up. Extraordinary Ministers of the Holy Eucharist will be scheduled approximately once a month.
Appropriate Age Level: Confirmed persons through adults with a deep appreciation of the sacrament.
The duty of a lector is to proclaim the Word of God with reverence. He or she must enjoy reading and be comfortable in front of people. Besides the readings, the lector reads the prayer of the faithful and often the announcements at the end of Mass. To help lectors prepare, each lector receives a copy of the “Workbook for Lectors, Gospel Readers and Proclaimers of the Word.” Lectors are asked to read and study these readings beforehand which are found is this workbook or at the USCCB website (link below). They are asked to arrive 15 minutes before mass in order to look over the readings and prayers. Training occurs on an individual basis.
Appropriate Age Level: Middle school aged through adult.
Special Skills Required: Above average reading ability. Reverence for God’s word.
A grateful heart is the first qualification of an usher as this is a ministry of true service and assistance. Ushers are team players that the Church relies on to help maintain a smooth flow before, during and after a liturgy. These “go-to” men and women play an essential role in welcoming guests in the door with a smile. This act of hospitality is the first key role of an usher.
Ushers also assist in preparing for mass by ensuring guests can find a seat, take up the weekly collection, direct the communion procession, and distribute special handouts and envelopes at Mass. They are prepared to assist with emergency situations and make sure that the church is clear of all handouts and tidy after each Mass.
There is a sign-up book on a table in the back of the church which provides parishioners an opportunity to carry up the gifts of bread and wine at the Offertory procession. The ushers check the book each Mass to see if someone has signed up. If no one has signed up, the ushers may invite parishioners to take part in this simple but meaningful ministry.
Ushers are placed in teams or “crews” of four ministers. Each team is scheduled on a monthly rotation with that crew. Special Masses are scheduled through our ministry scheduler and involve ministers from various teams.
Teams are coordinated with the help of an usher captain. The role of captain is reserved for a dependable and organized volunteer. A captain must be well informed of the usher duties and can help direct his or her team. They should be able to communicate well with their team by phone, email, text message or by weekly conversation. Captains are encouraged to report regularly to our director of liturgy.
Often unseen by the congregation, our plant care volunteers work as a part of our environment team to give care to our plants and flowers inside the church. Some of their primary care duties include watering, pruning, placing and arranging flowers, and changing out the water in fresh flower arrangements. They assist with ordering plants for Christmas, Easter and other special celebrations.
We have a rotation of volunteers in this ministry who maintain all the plants inside the church.

Our ensemble is a worship team comprised of musicians, both professional and volunteer, who come together to serve the Lord by leading worship at our 10:00 am Mass. They love a contemporary arrangement of a classic hymn and favor liturgical songs, both old and new, that are full of life and energy. Team members have a passion for leading worship music, yet many are active musicians in the local Madison music scene too.
Some team members are students or are recent graduates from the University of Wisconsin’s music program, while others are active in community bands and choirs. These singers and instrumentalists offer their gifts, whether guitar, piano, bass, keyboard, percussion, trumpet, violin, or flute, in hopes of drawing the community deeper into prayer and relationship with Jesus. Members of this group also lead several Praise & Worship events throughout the year.
Come worship with us on Sunday mornings at 10:00 am!
If you have a heart for music and worship, we invite you to consider sharing your gifts with the Lord.
Whether you sing, play an instrument, or know how to operate a soundboard, we would love to have you involved with our Ensemble and Audio/Video worship team. Training is available.
A real anchor in our parish music program, our St. Peter Adult Choir can be found singing at the 10:00 a.m. Mass Sundays in rotation and collaboration with our ensemble from September to June. This welcoming community of singers is open to anyone who enjoys singing and is looking for a way to praise God in song. No previous musical experience or formal audition is required, just the ability to sing in tune and sing to the Lord.
While it is most helpful for singers to commit to our yearly schedule, we do have some flexibility and encourage newly interested singers to join seasonally or for special occasions. In addition to Sunday Mass, this choir sings for many special feast days and holy days. High school students in grades 9-12 are also invited to join the adult choir.
Rehearsals: Thursday evenings from 6:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.
Before Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter, rehearsal times are extended to 8:00 p.m.
Cantors at St. Peter play a special role in leading the liturgy. They are not just singers, but leaders of song and prayer. They engage the community with their voices and gestures encouraging them to actively partake in worship. Prayer is an important part of a cantor's role. They take time to reflect on the psalm and pray the music so that God’s word has a chance to reach the hearts of His people.
This ministry is open to trained singers who are comfortable singing individually as well as with groups. Cantors sing at our 5:15 p.m. & 8:00 a.m. liturgies individually and sing at the 10:00 a.m. liturgies with the Adult Choir and Ensemble.
Our St. Peter’s Youth Choir sings at many key liturgies throughout the liturgical year from All Saints to Easter Sunday. It is open to singers and instrumentalists in 3rd grade through high school. Exceptions can be made for 2nd graders who read and listen well.
Rehearsals are Wednesday evenings from 5:30 – 6:25 p.m. on all scheduled Religious Education days, September through April.
The St. Peter Adult Hand Bell Choir is open to music readers of all ages who are interested in making our special liturgies more beautiful. It is particularly well suited for those who play another musical instrument such as high school students or singers. The choir plays primarily for Christmas Eve & Easter Vigil Masses but can be heard at other special feast days and holy days throughout the year too
